本日のノースショア、またまたフルオンショア、、、、
ハァ〜〜っとため息が出ちゃうくらいのジャンクコンディション、、、
でもようやく明日はノースイースト、明後日からはイーストに振り、
水曜にラージノース、そして金曜にはロングピリオドノースウエストが入る模様。
なので、今日のブログは、デイリークリップにちなんで、
鉄人／アベカワヨシオさんのお話お話〜〜〜
Fully onshore again…
Junk condition is continuing….
But swell’s gonna be north east tomorrow and swing to east by tomorrow.
And long north west swell will fill in by friday.
So today’s blog will be about a story about Yoshio Abekawa/The Iron Man~~~
アベカワさんとの最大の思い出と言えば、やはり１９８９年に行った初めての南アフリカトリップだろう。
ダーバンに住むシェーパー／スパイダーマーフィーとの繋がりを持っていたアベカワさんを頼りに、
ホリグチケンキ君、アライヒデオ君といった異色のメンバーで、初サウスアフリカトリップを敢行したのだ。
まずはジョハネスバーグへ飛び、そこから国内線でダーバンへ、スパイダーさんがピックアップしてくれ、
ベイオブプレンティの目の前のホテルにチェックイン。
翌日からスパイダーさんやライダーのピエールトスティ等のケアの元、
ノースコースト＆サウスコーストへウエイブハンティングに出かけた。
確か初日から素晴らしい朝焼けの中、ノースコーストのトンガットビーチでジェフリーズの様な波に遭遇し、
一気にテンションが上がったのを覚えている。
こうなれば一日も早くジェフリーズベイに行ってみたくなるってもんだ。
スパイダーさんは忙しいシェイプの時間をさいて、俺達とジェフリーズトリップに付き合ってくれた。
ダーバンからポートエリザベスへフライトし、そこから車で一時間、ようやく夢にまで見たジェフリーズに到着〜
都会のダーバンとは違った、カントリーフィーリング漂う雰囲気が、ジェフリーズを愛おしくさせる程だった。
ここでもスパイダーさんのセッティングで、ポイント近くのコンドを借り、自炊スタイルに入って行った。
残念ながら波はなく、毎日車で３０分くらいの所にあるケープサンフランシスのシールポイントに通った。
ここもポイントブレイクで、インサイドはシールビーチと呼ばれるビーチブレイクがあり、
コンシスタントでいつもサーファブルな波がブレイクしていた。
スパイダーさんはシェーパーとして多忙な身なので、３〜４日でダーバンに戻り、
ここからが俺等のアフリカンサーフサファリが始まった〜〜
まずはアップノースして、イーストロンドンエリアへ走った。
ここもまたサーフタウンで、ウエンディボサと言うレディースワールドチャンプを輩出した場所で、
千葉に住むテレンスローターさんもイーストロンドン出身だと聞いた。
この町をベースに地図とサーフガイドブックを頼りに、片っ端からサーフチェックを入れ、
ついにイーストロンドン、いやサウスアフリカを代表するナフーンリーフでクラシックウエイブに遭遇する事が出来た。
サイズアップするとサンセットの様になるというナフーンリーフ。
水はややグリーニーでボトムは見えなかったが、クリーンなラインアップとビューテホーなモーニングライトに照らされ、
初日のトンガット以来の最高のセッションをメイクすることが出来た。
ところが後で知った事だが、ナフーンリーフはシャークアタックで有名な所らしく、
俺等が行く前もアタックがあり、その後もあったというくらいで、何も知らずに水中なんかやっていたことが恐ろしかった、、
イーストロンドンでの日々を過ごし、再びジェフリーズへ戻るも、相変わらず波は小さいので、
今度はヘッドトゥウエスト〜〜ケープタウンを目指した。
運転は皆で代わる代わるやってるが、アベカワさんが運転すると超マイペースのゆっくり運転。
大陸のフリーウエイでの走り方とは程遠いので、すぐに却下されてしまっていた。
そういえばスパイダーさんとシールビーチに向かうダートロードでもノロノロ運転で、
スパイダーさんに、ヘイ、ヨシオ、こんなダートロードこそスピード出さなきゃバンプを拾ってしまうんだぜ〜と言われていた。
なので道中アベカワさんはもっぱら後ろの座席でゆっくりしてもらっていた〜
結局ケープタウントリップでは、風ビュ〜ビュ〜寒寒でまともにサーフせず、もっぱらクル〜ジン〜
喜望峰に行ったり、当時ASPが行われたビッグウエイブスポット／アウターコメキーをチェックに行ったり、
その近くでアワビを捕ったりし、大量のアバロニをホテルに持って帰り、ゲンキ君クッキングの元、アワビづくしのディナーとなった。
ホテルオーナーの老夫婦にもお裾分けをしたが、アワビを食べた事も無かった様で、恐る恐る口にしていたのには驚いた。
一方アベカワさんはアワビの刺身に舌を打つ程感動していた〜〜〜
そんなこんなでケープタウンから一気にジェフリーズへ三度戻り、今度こそ次のスエルに期待し待機った。
ところが残念ながらアベカワさんは時間切れのため、一足早く帰る事になった。
思えば、２０代，３０代、そして４０代といった異色のジェネレーションサーファーでの初サウスアフリカトリップだったが、
楽しく愉快に時を過ごせたと思う。
それもやはりスパイダーさんとの繋がりを持ったアベカワさんのおかげでもあったことに感謝したい。
その後アベカワさんは一旦ダーバンに寄り、スパイダーさん宅で一泊して帰国の途につき、
残った俺とゲンキ君、ヒデ君はジェフリーズベイのファンタスティックな波を堪能することになったのだ。
Memoriable moment with Abekawa-san is about the trip to South Africa in 1989.
Abekawa-san had a connection with the shaper, Spider Murphy who lives in Durban so
Me, Genki Horiguchi and Hideo Arai decided to do this trip to South Africa.
Firstly, we have to fly to Johannesburg and transfer to another plane to Durban.
When we got to Durban, Mr. Spider picked us up and
checked into the hotel front of Bay of Plenty.
Next day, we started wave hunting along with Mr. Spider and Pierre Tostee.
I remember we met with a waves like in Jeffreys from early morning and got stoked.
Who won’t want to surf in that kind of condition?
Mr.Spider was busy shaping but he came along with us.
We flew to Port Elizabeth from Durban and we finally reached to Jeffreys Bay by driving for an hour~
This place’s soft atmosphere was totally different from Durban but I loved it.
And Mr. Spider borrowed us a condominium near the point started to stay there.
But there weren’t waves so we had to drive 30 minutes to this point called Seal in Cape San Francis.
Seal had a beach break in the inside so even though the condition was consistent, this place had surfable waves.
Mr. Spider was so busy so he had to go back to Durban in couple days so
our real African Surf Safari started from here~~~
First of all, we went up to East London Area.
This place is also a surf town that Wendy Botha/ Ladies World Champion is from here.
I also heard that Terrence Lotter who lives in Chiba is from East London as well.
Anyway, we started to check around the surf points as this place as a base camp and
we were able to meet the classic big wave in Nahoon Reef.
Nahoon Reef becomes like Sunset point of it gets some size in.
Water was pretty greeny so couldn’t see the bottom but looked beautiful
with the morning sun light and had a wonderful session.
I knew this later but Nahoon Reef is a famous shark attack point and
there was some attack going on before and after we went. Got frightened that we were in there…
Stayed in East London for a while and went back to Jeffreys but waves are still small so
we headed to the west/ Cape Town.
Everyone took turns on driving through Africa but Abekawa-san drives like a slow poke so rejected him as a driver.
His driving reminds me that Mr. Spider said to him ‘You gotta drive faster if you don’t wanna eat shit by the bump’,
when Abekawa-san was driving to Seal Beach.
So we made him stay in the back seat~~
When we got to Cape Town, winds were too strong so we just cruised around~~~
Went to Cape of Good Hope, Outer Kommetjie and cathced bunch of Abalne and Genki-kun cooked it for us.
We gave some to the owner of the hotel but it was surprising that they looked like they never ate it before.
And Abekawa-san was deeply impressed by abalone’s sashimi~~~
Anyway, we went back to Jeffreys again and waited for the swell to fill in.
But suddenly, time has came so Abekawa-san had to go back to Japan.
When I think back, this trip was with many generation’s surfer but we really had great time there.
And I want to thank to Abekawa-san that this trip was able to do because of his connection with Mr. Spider.
Mr. Abekawa went back to Durban to get ready to go back to Japan and
the left ones, which is us had a wonderful days with a fantastic waves at Jeffreys Bay.
